What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are artificial, titanium tooth roots surgically placed into the jawbone to support permanent or removable replacement teeth (crowns, bridges, or dentures). They act as sturdy anchors for prosthetic teeth, preventing bone loss and providing a natural-looking, durable solution for missing teeth.

Key Aspects of Dental Implants:

Structure: Comprised of a post (the root), an abutment (connector), and a crown (the visible tooth).
Types: Endosteal (placed directly into the jawbone) and Subperiosteal (placed under the gum but above the jawbone).
Process: The metal post fuses with the jawbone over 2–6 months through a process called osseointegration.
Benefits: Improved chewing, speech, and comfort compared to dentures, with high success rates.

Frequently Asked Questions

Replacing Missing Teeth: They provide a fixed, long-term solution for single, multiple, or full-arch tooth loss.
Stability: Unlike dentures, they do not slip and feel more like natural teeth.
Oral Health: They maintain jawbone density, preventing the bone loss that usually occurs after losing a tooth.

Endosteal Implants: The most common type, inserted directly into the jawbone.
Subperiosteal Implants: A metal frame fitted onto the jawbone just below the gum tissue.
All-on-4 / All-on-6: Techniques used to support a full set of fixed teeth using only 4 or 6 implants.

Dental implants have a high success rate, often cited around 95%. However, good oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups are essential to prevent infections around the implant, known as peri-implant diseases.
